You have two genuinely different choices: a floating escape on the water in Key Largo or a spacious Disney villa built over Seven Seas Lagoon near Orlando.

For this guide, I only count a property as overwater when the accommodation itself floats or is supported above water. A waterfront bungalow, island cottage, house with a long dock, or room with an ocean view is not the same thing.

That distinction matters because Florida has several beautiful resorts that look wonderfully tropical in photos, but only two stays really fit the overwater category.

What “overwater bungalow in Florida” really means

Most of us picture the Maldives or Bora Bora when we hear “overwater bungalow”: a private villa on stilts, clear water underneath, and a ladder leading straight from the deck into the sea.

Florida does not have a large resort filled with rows of ocean villas like that. Instead, its two real options give you different pieces of the experience.

Stay Ombi gives you the feeling of sleeping directly on natural coastal water in the Florida Keys. Disney gives you a much larger resort villa built above a freshwater lagoon, complete with the conveniences of Walt Disney World.

1. Stay Ombi floating bungalows in Key Largo

Stay Ombi is the closest Florida gets to the dreamy feeling of escaping to your own little bungalow on the water. The floating accommodations sit on the waters off Key Largo and are reached by boat rather than by road.

The experience includes the comforts you actually want overnight, such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, microwave, coffee setup, drinking water, and water-sports gear. Depending on the package you book, food and breakfast options can vary, so I’d choose your exact package based on how much you want handled before you head out to the bungalow.

What the stay feels like

Stay Ombi feels less like checking into a resort and more like disappearing onto your own private floating hideaway. That is exactly why I think it is such a fun option for a romantic night or a special Florida Keys stop.

The included arrival boat ride is short, generally around 10 minutes, but once you are out there you cannot casually wander to a restaurant or convenience store. Standard arrival and departure transfers run on a set schedule, and extra trips ashore may cost more.

Bring everything I know I will want for the evening before boarding, including medications, sunscreen, snacks, and anything special for dinner. You will enjoy the isolation a lot more when you are not mentally inventorying what you left in the car.

Weather matters here more than it does at a conventional hotel. Wind, storms, and conditions on the water can affect transfers, paddling, and how much time you want to spend outside.

Who should choose Stay Ombi

Pick Stay Ombi for a couple or small group that wants privacy, sunsets, kayaking, paddleboarding, and the novelty of actually sleeping on the water. It is the strongest Florida choice when the bungalow itself is the main event.

Skip it if you need effortless access to restaurants, nightlife, a full-service pool deck, or frequent trips back to shore. Travelers with mobility concerns should also ask about boarding, thresholds, bathroom access, and emergency procedures before booking.

2. Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows

Disney’s Polynesian bungalows are true structures built above Seven Seas Lagoon at Walt Disney World. They are enormous compared with Stay Ombi and feel much more like vacation homes than tiny romantic bungalows.

Each bungalow sleeps up to eight adults and includes two full bathrooms, a full kitchen, living and dining space, a washer and dryer, and a private deck with a plunge pool. There are two actual bedrooms, with the remaining sleeping space coming from pull-down beds in the living areas.

What Disney provides that Key Largo does not

Disney makes the overwater concept incredibly easy. You can walk to restaurants, use resort pools, hop on the monorail or water transportation, and return to a full kitchen and laundry at the end of the day.

You also get a very different atmosphere. Seven Seas Lagoon is freshwater, guests do not swim from the bungalow decks, and the private plunge pool is the main place to cool off right outside your villa.

The location is fantastic if Magic Kingdom is a big part of your trip, especially when you have kids or a multigenerational group. You are paying as much for the space and resort location as you are for the novelty of staying above the water.

Who should choose Disney

Choose Disney for a family or group that will actually use the extra bedrooms, kitchen, laundry, two bathrooms, and transportation. Splitting the bungalow among several people makes far more sense than paying for all that space as a couple.

Not choose it if your dream is silence, open ocean, or snorkeling right from the deck. Boats, resort activity, fireworks, and the Magic Kingdom skyline are all part of the experience here.

Stay Ombi versus Disney

• Choose Stay Ombi for a natural-water setting, privacy, paddling, and a romantic Florida Keys escape.
• Choose Disney for families, bigger groups, a full kitchen, two bathrooms, laundry, a private plunge pool, and theme park transportation.
• Choose neither if a swimmable beach, multiple restaurants, a large resort pool, and easy road access matter more than sleeping above the water.

These stays are so different that nightly rate alone is a poor way to compare them. Stay Ombi is about seclusion and the water, while Disney is about space, convenience, and access to an entire resort destination.

For a honeymoon or anniversary, I’d lean toward Stay Ombi unless Disney itself is part of the dream. For a family celebration, Disney wins easily on logistics.

Florida alternatives that are not overwater

Florida has several resorts that give you the tropical feeling people often want when they search for overwater bungalows. I think these are worth considering, as long as you know the rooms are on land.

Bungalows Key Largo: Best adults-only resort alternative

Bungalows Key Largo is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort with waterfront and garden bungalows. Even the waterfront accommodations sit on land, so this is not a secret third overwater option.

Choose it over Stay Ombi when I want restaurants, pools, drinks, activities, and a full resort around me. It still feels romantic and tropical, but the trip is much easier if you prefer having everything within walking distance.

Little Palm Island: Best private-island alternative

Little Palm Island gives you thatched roofs, a private island, gorgeous water, and the feeling of leaving normal life behind. Its suites are on the island rather than built over the sea.

Choose Little Palm when the priority is luxurious seclusion and service rather than being technically overwater. The smaller suites are about 550 square feet, while the largest options reach roughly 1,000 square feet.

Sunset Key Cottages: Best Key West alternative

Sunset Key Cottages sits on a private 27-acre island just offshore from Key West and has one- to four-bedroom cottages, including oceanfront options. You arrive by boat, but the cottages themselves sit on land.

Houseboats and stilt homes

Houseboats can be a fun way to sleep directly on the water without paying resort prices, but the experience varies wildly from one rental to the next. Some are polished vacation homes, while others are much closer to staying on a basic boat.

Stilt homes are even trickier because a house can be raised above land or shoreline without actually standing over navigable water. Read the description carefully and look at the full-property photos rather than relying on a cropped deck shot.

For small rentals, I always check the exact location, docking setup, utilities, parking, weather policy, and who I’d contact if something goes wrong at night. Those details matter much more on the water than they do in a normal hotel room.

When the Caribbean is the better answer

If your nonnegotiable is stepping from a private deck straight into clear Caribbean water, I’d stop trying to force Florida to be the Maldives. A short international trip gives you many more true overwater choices.

Palafitos at El Dorado Maroma, Mexico

Palafitos at El Dorado Maroma is an adults-only, all-inclusive overwater enclave on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. The bungalows have direct ocean access, glass floor panels, private infinity pools, outdoor showers, and butler service.

This is one of the easier international swaps for Florida because you can fly into Cancún and continue by road rather than adding a domestic island flight. For couples who care most about swimming from the room, Palafitos delivers much more of the classic overwater fantasy than either Florida option.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian

Sandals Grande St. Lucian is another strong choice for couples who want an all-inclusive overwater stay. Its overwater bungalows include glass floor panels, soaking tubs, hammocks, and butler service.

Getting to Saint Lucia takes more effort than flying to Florida or the Riviera Maya, so I’d only make the jump if the bungalow experience is a major part of the trip. How to compare the real cost

Both Florida overwater options are specialty stays, and neither is where I’d look for a bargain vacation. Rates can swing dramatically by date, party size, holidays, promotions, and cancellation terms.

Instead of comparing the first nightly rate you see, price the whole trip from your front door back to your front door.

• Add every required night, tax, resort fee, parking charge, and mandatory fee.
• Include flights, rental cars, ground transfers, boats, and any extra night needed before or after the stay.
• Check which meals, snacks, drinks, groceries, or delivery costs are included.
• Make sure kayaks, paddleboards, plunge pools, Wi-Fi, housekeeping, and transfers are included in your exact booking.
• Count real beds and bathrooms rather than relying only on the maximum occupancy number.
• Compare cancellation policies before choosing the cheapest rate.

For Stay Ombi, the access schedule and any extra boat rides can affect your real cost. For Disney, a large group may find the villa easier to justify because everyone is sharing a kitchen, laundry, bathrooms, and transportation.
